This is one of the hottest topics of the age. There is so much heat around the debate of the second amendment it's amazing.
Some people say that guns should be banned. They're too dangerous. They are purely for the purpose of causing death. They do nothing but help the cause of violence. (I'm going to ignore the reason that 'criminals use them so we should ban them' reason because it's stupid to the point of ridiculous)
Frankly, I regard that view as short-sighted (There's a pun in there somewhere). Too dangerous? Purely for killing? That's a pure example of generalization. Guns are tools of desctruction, to be sure (Oh yeah, I'm also ignoring the argument that 'guns kill people'. If guns kill people, then cars crash themselves, beer gets drunk, and toast toasts toast).
However, the reason weapons exist is because conflict exists. And I don't know about you, but if someone pointed a gun at my family, I'd want a gun to point back. To defend yourself against a power means you must have power of an equal level. That's what guns are for.
When people started using guns, the world became equal. Suddenly old men and young men no longer were separated in terms of strength. A 90 year old geezer could cut down a 20 year old buck with a mere trigger pull. But looking beyond that, the use of guns has revolutionized our defenses. When hostiles break into an old woman's home, all she must do is point a gun at them and assure them she knows how to shoot. "Let's talk about Jesus until the police arrive, honey."
If you are one of those people who think that guns should be banned because they cause deaths, let me remind you that people are at fault, not the weapons they use. Take all the weapons away from man and he will beat each other to death with his bare fists. Then what will you blame?
